The Lviv Puppet Theater began its work on April 8, 1945 with the premiere of Antonina Matskevich's play "Gusenya". At that time, the theater operated at the Lviv House of Folk Art. Already a year later, on April 15, 1946, the Lviv Puppet Theater officially opened as a separate institution with the premiere of the play "Ivasyk-Telesyk", staged by Antonina Matskevich based on Ivan Franko's fairy tale.
According to a legend, the founder of the theater A. Matskevich used to make an interlude before performances with two puppets who opened the performances: King Danylo and the boy Levchyk (the king's little son). The emblem of the theater was precisely this boy Levchyk, who was depicted on the background of a shield with three towers which symbolized the Ukrainian coat of arms - the trident. Telesyk.
